The Knowledge-Triangle Platform for the Water-Energy-Food Nexus (TriNex) is a multidisciplinary project aimed at addressing the deep-rooted research and innovation vacuum in Egypt. With its emphasis on the importance of the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus as the launching pad for Egypt’s development, it will provide a unique and vital boost to Egypt’s ailing research establishment with particular focus on Egypt’s looming security difficulties. Through the TriNex Project, a much needed injection of essential research and innovation will be provided to Egypt.
Water presents the most critical part of the WEF-Nexus as it is a scarce and non-renewable resource. It is crucial for both food and energy production and at the same time its availability and quality are threatened by mismanagement, overuse and over extraction. Given the importance and the scarcity of this resource concepts like the water footprint of production and virtual water increasingly gain momentum. Energy is needed for water pumping in irrigation, desalination, water treatment and water distribution. At the same time, water is an input for electricity generation through hydro and needed for cooling processes. The two are thus heavy consumers of each other. Similarly, food production consumes energy in the form of fertilizers, machine power but also serves as an input for bioenergy. In the light of a growing global population food security is a central concern of national policies for the future. Feeding 7 billion people within the limits of scare water and energy resources presents a challenge that cannot be met by treating water, energy or food issues separately. This is why integrated action towards the WEF-Nexus is required.
